Effect of Parents on Child’s Behavior      


Parent training programs are services that help parents to improve their parental objective and communication with their kids. The aim of these programs is to reduce the risk of child abuse, neglect, or reducing disruptive behaviors. These training programs are also known as parent education programs. They focus on building skills of interacting and managing children behaviors. To be considered as a parent-training program the overall focus of the program should be training parents on various aspects. Parents require this training to become role models of kids. Different countries offer these programs because they are important for the kids. However, these systems are important in keeping parents on the responsibility of nurturing their kids. The programs educate parents on the following aspects.

The reason why parents should go for these training programs is that children possess powerful skills of observing. This ability has a great implication to parents. Large percentage of children wants to copy the behaviors of their parents. This places a big responsibility to the parents. It is important parents to set good example to their children. Negative examples can be harmful to child’s growth and development and lead to bad behavior. This study will aim at proving the statement parents are the best teachers and role models to their children and they should go for training to maintain their responsibilities. To prove this the article will discuss the following factors offered in parent training organizations that influence child’s behavior. Keeping discipline positive, avoiding child abuse, treating children equally, and fighting frenzy. I support this because parents really influence the behavior of their children. Most children try their best to model the behavior of parents.

First, these programs help parents in remaining on their track by giving them the guidelines of maintaining positive discipline on their kids. Parents are trained on how to maintain positive discipline in their children. Discipline is very important to children. It is the role of parents to maintain good discipline to their kids. Parents can maintain good discipline to their children in several ways. These ways include recognizing safety issues, parents setting a positive example, setting appropriate limits to kids, enforcing consequences consistently and managing stress effectively. Parents should provide a positive example by doing positive things for the benefit of children.

Parents should always instruct their children to do what they do instead of telling them to do what they say. Parents should not burst in the presence of their children because there will be likelihood of modeling this behavior. Kids are always watching and they will learn more from what they see than what they hear. Parents should set limits to their kids even if they protest. Kids should not be left to do what they want. Effective parents are able to tolerate the anger of their children. They should only focus on the best interest of the child but not allowing extra freedom. Providing appropriate limits ensures the child has rules to follow. Effective parents do not threaten consequences but they follow them. Let the child understand the importance of the consequence. Parents should ensure these consequences are consistent.

Parents who manage their stress effectively have success in disciplining their children. Stressed parents are likely to yell or be inconsistent with discipline. Stress will lead to punishment instead of discipline to the child. Stress from parents can lead to behavioral problems. In addition, while disciplining kids it is good to provide positive attention to the kid daily. Kids require attention from parents especially the single parents. Also, make the kids to understand what is expected from them. Effective parents are able to tell kids their expectations. Provide instructions to kids and follow up to see whether they observe them. It is the responsibility of parents to ensure positive discipline to their kids. This calls for parent involvement in child growth and development (Berger, 1991).

Second, parents are taught on how to avoid abusing and neglecting kids. Child abuse causes antisocial and destructive behavior. Abused children try to understand why they are being abused. After understanding this, they try to cope with it. Parents who abuse their kids cause them to become aggressive and violent. Their experience may lead to drug abuse. Child abuse is opposite of what children need as they grow. They destroy the child instead of modeling. Child abuse may be through severe punishments and harsh treatment to the children. Canning and overworking is also a form of child abuse. Some parents think severe punishment is good for the discipline of the child. This is opposite because it will lead to bad behavior. Kids should not be punished for every mistake the do. Sometimes offer guidance to them instead of punishment. Child abuse will harden the kids and later become used to it. They should not be overworked. Parents should offer parental guidance to their kids. The kids may become violent to the other kids if they are neglected and abused several times. Parents should avoid child abuse and show love to their kids. Child abuse will lead to negative behavior to kids because they will feel inferior. Use the right channel and method to correct your child (Howe, 2005).

The third factor they are taught in these programs is the importance of treating kids equally. As a parent, you should treat your kids equally. This treatment should be in both punishment and rewarding. Effective parents will always give the same punishment to their kids. In addition, when kids perform their duties well or pass exams it is good to reward them equally. This equality indicates equal love to all kids from parents while inequality will show lack of love to some kids. Kids will grow observing the behavior of their parents towards them. It is good to have equal treatment to them. If kids are not treated the same they may develop a negative attitude towards parents. They may also start differing as they grow because some feel neglected. Kids require love and rewards when they do well. Rewards will encourage them to work harder. Children will model this behavior and they may end up treating their kids in the same way. It is good for parents to take the responsibility of nurturing their kids by treating them with equal love and care. This will motivate to develop a positive behavior. Parent’s involvement in kid affairs will offer a good bridge between home and school (Bronfenbrenner & Ceci, 1994)

In conclusion, it is clear that parents are the best teachers and role models to their kids. These require parents to go for training programs to ensure they have knowledge and skills of handling their kids. This will be important in maintaining and correcting the behavior of kids. As a parent, maintain positive discipline to your child. Avoid things that abuse your child like overworking them. Learn to appreciate your kids when they perform well equally. Also punish them equally when they do something wrong. Avoid yelling on your children. The explanation of the above three points clearly shows the importance of parents in kid’s behavior. Parents should provide a positive image to their kids. As a parent you should not tell you child not do something that you are already doing like telling your child not to smoke yet you are smoking. Always do things that your child can model and become successful. Pay daily attention to your child. Children will model any behavior they observe from their parents either positive or negative. It is the responsibility of parents to maintain a positive behavior to their children. If parents conflict they should not let it to spill to children. The weakness of my position is that parents can never be perfect. Kids will end up modeling bad behaviors from parents. However, this does not change my view because parents are the ones in first line of bringing up their kids. They are the best teachers and role models to their kids.
